The Seneca Falls Convention, was an early and influential women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York over two days, July 19–20, 1848.
The convention was seen by some of its contemporaries, including organizer and featured speaker Lucretia Mott, as but a single step in the continuing effort by women to gain for themselves a greater proportion of social, civil and moral rights,
In the decades leading up to 1848, a small number of women were beginning to push against restrictions imposed upon them by society. Progressive men aided in this effort. In 1831, Reverend Charles Grandison Finney began allowing women to pray aloud in gatherings of both men and women.
Starting in 1832, abolitionist and journalist William Lloyd Garrison organized anti-slavery associations which encouraged the full participation of women.
